Musciano - Scientific Commemorative
and
Musciano Unlimited Event
10 September 2005

The September 10, 2005 MUSCIANO-SCIENTIFIC COMMEMORATIVE & MUSCIANO UNLIMITED EVENT is now history. The annual contest was held under sunny skies and a light breeze on Saturday, 10 September at the Meadowood Model Aerodrome in Lorton,Virgina. Officiating was Guest of Honor, Walter Musciano, Dick Houser as CD, Tom McClain as Alternate CD, and Frank Dobrydney as Overall Event Director.

The evening before the contest, a welcome pot-luck dinner was held for Walt at the home of Tom and Sheryl McClain. Thanks to them both for opening up their home and organizing the evening. Henry and Barbara Werner were also gracious enough to host Walt at their home during his entire stay in Northern Virgina for the contest.

The contest got off to a great start following the Appearance judging by Walt with Speed and Stunt running concurrently in circles one and two. Events remained on track throughout the warm day as the contestants battled sun, a fickle breeze, and sometimes their own aircraft for mastery of the skies. Skill, hard work, and just plain good luck waxed and wained as they tasted the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Team Racing was the third flying event and the crowd was not disappointed in the flyers' antics as balsa airpower defeated the traps of accidental tripping and control line garroting. In the Unlimited event the peanut gallery chose the winner but was disappointed at the chance to see one of the contestants with engine problems miss his chance to put on a really spectacular show in a routine that involved an unnatural act between a C-47 and a Waco assault glider. In the end there could be just one Victor and he stood like a giant at the end of the day to claim his prize as Overall Champion from Walt. The results are as follows:

Thanks to Jim Borecky for his professional looking signs and photography, Jeff McCusker of BLM for mowing our access road, Katie Shea for her work registering contestants and selling raffle tickets, Dick Houser and Hal Howard for marking the flying circles, Hal Howard for mixing the fuel, and those of you who came to enjoy the day with us as spectators.

So OK, you know how to contact Walt and get some of his plans. It's time to finally get an entry together for next year's contest. We plan to begin preparations for the event much earlier next year and attempt to really drum up interest. Walt mentioned to us that he is dreaming up a new event he would like to incorporate into next year's contest. Also, Dr. Frank Iacobelis came across some great plans on eBay that feature many of Walt's designs that are perfect for the Unlimited event. Time to replace that old number 11 blade and get busy.

See you next year !!
