The 2007 Musciano Flyers

The second annual Michigan Musciano Fun Fly was held on Saturday, 21 July 2007 at the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo, Michigan.   The Kalamazoo Smoke Rings, the Radio Control Club of Detroit, and the Lansing Area Flying Aces jointly sponsor this Michigan control line event.   This contest honors the legendary Walt Musciano, who has been designing and building model aircraft for over half a century and who for many of us, designed our first model airplane.

The emphasis of this event is on fun and nostalgia and the aircraft are limited to the carved balsa fuselage, solid wing, semi-scale designs produced by Scientific models in the 1960s.   This formula also starts everyone on an equal footing and lets us once again experience the fun of flying these little birds.   A new event, the Musciano Unlimited, was added this year.   Any Walt Musciano design is eligible for this contest and entries ranged from designs found in books to an .049 Bearcat that was scaled up to .35 size!   This formula resulted in a large number of aircraft, a great day of competition, and some wonderful entertainment for participants and spectators alike!

Despite a bit more wind than flyers wanted, the day was warm and sunny and everyone had a great time!   Two circles were available and the event ran at a smooth and comfortable pace. Although Walter Musciano was unable to attend this year, he was there in spirit.   Walter graciously signed each of the winners' award certificates, which were mounted on beautiful plaques by Rich Kacmarsky.

The day was marked by some tremendous flying and great fun such as Greg Bossio's barrel roll and Frank Carlisle's Autogiro flights.   The proximity to the Air Zoo and the Kalamazoo Airport also provided some interesting diversions from scale model aviation, like watching a real F4U Corsair take off.   All in all, it was a great day and we all look forward to the 2008 event!
