Douglas Dauntless
WW2 US Navy Dive Bomber
|
During the early days of World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy found itself in a defensive posture. With most of its battleships out of commission, the aircraft carriers along with their planes and pilots were all that kept the mighty Japanese fleet at bay. This all changed at the Battle of Midway when the Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber turned the tide of the war by sinking four Japanese aircraft carriers. Three of these, INJ Akagi, INJ Soryu, and INJ Kaga were hit and eventually sunk in an incredible 5 minutes. The fourth, INJ Hiryu followed the next day. The Japanese Navy never recovered from these losses.
