Amelia Earhart's Lockheed L-10
Historic Aircraft Model
|
Amelia Earhart, America's Sweetheart of the Sky, was a noted American aviation pioneer. She was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, for being the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Earhart set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. On July 2, 1937 during an attempted circumnavigational flight of the globe, Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. The plane that she had chosen for this attempt was the new Lockheed Electra L-10E.
